That first day we saw this very pregnant mare. The National Park Service controls the population of the horses on the Maryland side of the island. They use a vaccine to prevent pregnancy that is given to a certain number of mares each spring. Without controlling the population the environment on the island would soon be destroyed as there are no natural predators for the horses.
