We saw this female Barred Owl at Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary. We watched her for a while while she was seemingly dozing then she suddenly started tearing at something in her talons. She ate steadily for about 15 minutes before showing us the remnants of the rat which she then brought to her nest (which we couldn't see) Barred owls often nest in tree cavities, often taking them over from crows or squirrels. They eat mice and rodents but will also feed on grouse, hawks and ducks. They have been known to go after fish. | 2010_03_31_Florida-10331-Web.jpg |
