"If you know what's best for you, you'd turn around now". This Black Vulture and about 100 of it's cousins were what greeted us as we drove up to Janes Scenic Drive (which was not very scenic at all) in the Fackahatchee Strand Preserve. Interesting Black Vulture Facts: Unlike Turkey Vulturees Black Vultures are found in flocks which are known as either a Committee, a Meal, a Vortex, or a Wake of Vultures. An individual Black Vulture can not out-fight a Turkey Vulture which is bigger, but a "Meal" of Black Vultures will often take on a Turkey Vulture to drive it off. Black Vultures depend upon their keen eyesight to find food, they don't have the incredible sense of smell that Turkey Vultures have. The only sounds Black Vultures make are barking, grumbling or hissing noises. Vulture droppings can harm or kill trees and other vegetation. | 2010_04_01_Florida-10150-Web.jpg |
