Mission Mountains from the National Bison Range. The sky began to clear briefly in the late afternoon, revealing some of the peaks of the mountains. This was taken from the Prairie Drive. The National Bison Range is one of the oldest National Wildlife Refuges in the US, it was established in 1908 and contains 18,800 acres of land. There is a small bison herd that is the focus of bison research. The herd contains between 350 and 500 bison and was started originally with bison provided by the American Bison Society, a group that was founded in 1905 by Theodore Roosevelt and William Hornaday (who later became the first director of the Bronx Zoo) to help save the Bison from extinction. There are two drives in the National Bison Range. Only the Prairie Drive is open in winter. | 2016_01_12_Montana-10377-Pano-Edit1000.jpg |
