The colorful beak of the Atlantic Puffin is obviously attractive. What is not so obvious is that the inside of the mouth and the tongue are both bright yellow. The color of the beak actually fades to gray during the winter months. The beak size shrinks dramatically, and the breeding plates around the eyes fall off. These birds look so different in the winter that they were originally thought to be a separate species. | _JMS0045.jpg |
