2016_06_Savannah_Charleston-10363-Edit1000.jpg - The Wormsloe Historic site was one place we wanted to visit to see the avenue of live oaks and hanging spanish moss. It was the estate of the colonial carpenter Noble Jones who came to Savannah with James Oglethorpe and the first group of settlers that emigrated from England. From his start as a carpenter he helped the colony survive hunger, illness and war as a doctor, Indian agent and surveyor. He is also famous for helping defend the Georgia coast from the Spanish in the years before the Revolution. The state of Georgia bought the plantation from his descendants in 1973 and maintain the ruins, there are period costumed interpreters at programs, a museum with artifacts from the colonial and pre-colonial period, and there are interpretive nature trails past the ruins and along the marsh.
