2016_06_Savannah_Charleston-11664-Edit1000.jpg - We decided to take a horse-drawn carriage tour in Charleston to get a feel of the city. It was a great tour with a very knowledgeable guide and the horses were beautiful and healthy. There are quite a few carriage companies, some use horses, others use mules, they all cover the same areas. There are 3 sections of the city covered by the carriage tours and each carriage is assigned one of these routes by lottery at the beginning of their tour. This means that you have no idea what part of the city you will see when you take the tour. Our guide told us all about the homes and churches, explained the history of the area we went through. We learned about "haint blue" the light blue color that came from the Gullah-geechee culture that was believed to keep restless spirits away. We also learned about "Single" houses. They are long narrow homes with beautiful covered porches that serve as exterior hallways as well as porches to help with airflow to keep the houses cool. The porches are always on the south or west to protect from the afternoon sun.
