The Antelope wildfire was started by a lightning strike on the slope of Mount Washburn and discovered on Sept 14, 2010. The fire grew to over 5500 acres and was the largest of the 11 fires in Yellowstone this year. We took a drive around Blacktail loop the second day we were at Yellowstone. It wasn't very exciting. I had read it was a haven for wildlife, but all we saw was one sleepy Bison. Maybe it was the time of day or maybe we just made too much noise on the unpaved road. But we saw a small wisp of smoke as we drove which rapidly grew to this plume, you can see how hot the fire was by the red and orange in the smoke. We were a goodly distance from the fire, but it did close a portion of the loop road that day between Tower-Roosevelt and Canyon Village. | 2010_09_28_Yellowstone-10515-Edit750.jpg |
