CostaRica_66.JPG - A pair of Rhinoceros beetles (captive). Rhinoceros are among the largest of all beetles. Males have the characteristic horns which are used for fighting during mating season and for digging. The larger the horn the healthier the beetle. These beetles are harmless to humans as they can not bite or sting and are often seen as pets in parts of Asia due to to this and to their being very clean and easy to keep. They are also used in gambling as two males will fight if they hear the females mating call, which can be duplicated by a small noisemaker.
