The Kilauea Lightouse was built in 1907 as a landfall for ships from "the orient". The huge lens in this lighthouse is a clamshell (bivalve) shape second-order Fresnel lens, made in France in 1912 for $12,000. The lens weighs over 4.5 tons and was floated in a bed of mercury in a nine inch deep six foot wide trough (over 250 pounds of liquid mercury). There was a bit of a problem when the lens first arrived -- the assembly instructions were in French. This prompted an urgent call to Honolulu for someone to come to translate before the lens could be assembled. | 2009_09_29_726.jpg |
