This is one of the beautiful (but noisy) wild roosters of Kaua'i. This one was photographed during our trip out to Waimea Canyon. Wild chickens and roosters roam all of the Hawaiian islands. However, Kaua'i is the only one of the islands that has a problem controlling the population (apparently due to a Hurricane in 1992 that blew apart many chicken coops). There are also no Mongoose on Kaua'i to control their populations. Of course, the other islands have nothing to limit the Mongoose population! We did not find the chickens to be a problem, but the roosters crow a lot! We had a very good room (at the Hilton) and were not bothered by them. However, I could see how locals could grow to hate them. | _MIK0192.jpg |
