I was taken by the beauty of Bonaventure Cemetery - especially areas like this, with marble seats under the live oaks. John Muir, in his thousand mile walk from Indianapolis, Indiana to the Gulf coast of Florida in 1867, slept for 6 nights in the cemetery. The cemetery was the cheapest and safest place he could sleep. His book about that trip (entitled "A Thousand-Mile Walk to the Gulf") contained a chapter about the beauty of the cemetery ("Camping in the Tombs"). Unlike John Muir we had no desire to sleep upon the graves, The Hampton inn was plenty comfortable for us (and I'm pretty sure we would get in trouble if we tried). | 2016_06_Savannah_Charleston-10790-Edit1000.jpg |
