2009_07_02_Maine-314-Edit-Edit-Edit.jpg - We took a "moose tour" through "Maine Photo Tours" by Dale Stevens. Our guide was Vicky who had pet names for every moose she knew (and she knew all of them) over 3 years old. We were able to see and photograph this bull off of Telos Road in River Pond eating it's second favorite food - water lilies. Moose need calcium and sodium to build up their fat reserves and the bulls need these minerals to grow their antlers. they can eat up 60 lbs of plant material a day, often foregoing for 2-4 hours before sleeping for a similar time then going back out to eat. Andy Pandy is a 7 year old Bull which means that his rack will now be full size. This early in the season it's only a pale shade of what it will be come October and the rut. That dangle of skin (the dewlap) under his chin will fill with fat as the summer wears on to provide fuel for the upcoming winter. If you ever are in Maine and want a moose tour I highly recommend this outfit, they are incredibly knowledgeable and friendly and just so much fun. And if you need a place to stay in Millinocket they have a beautiful 3 bedroom house they rent.
