This is "Andy Panda"; as so named by Vicky who lead our "Moose Tour" Vicky was a wealth of knowledge about the area and the moose who lived there and their lifecycle. She had names for every moose over 3 years old we saw (and we saw 16 of them that night) Moose feed for 3-4 hours then go to rest and digest before heading back out to feed again. They can eat up to 60 lbs of grasses and aquatic grasses a day to build fat and for the bulls to build their antlers. Moose shed their antlers every year so they also need the calcium found in the water lilies and plants as well as licking the salt off the roads (one reason they really like logging roads - they spread calcium carbonate to keep down the dust) The waddle or bell under the chin is the dewlap which has no known biologic function. If you ever are in Northern Maine and want to go on a moose tour I can't recommend Dale Stevens and his Moose and Photo Safari's enough. They've got a wealth of knowledge of moose and the area and are friendly and easy to talk to. | 2009_07_02_Maine-351-Edit-Edit-Edit.jpg |
