These deer are tiny! This one reached to my shoulder...with the tips of it's antlers. (and I'm barely 5'2") They also have no fear of people, unfortunately. The sound of a car door means food for them and despite what the signs say it isn't just the tourists doing the feeding. We encountered a local family that pulled up next to us while we were photographing the deer and the man told us if we wanted to get a picture of them on their back legs we should hold up some treats. Which he proceeded to do, and then threw the bag of what appeared to be peanuts into the group of deer where they started to fight over it. Even worse the nuts were still in their plastic bag and several of the deer started coughing when they ingested the plastic. None of the tourists we met there fed the deer. | 2013_03_12_FloridaKeys-10286-Edit800.jpg |
