One of the tiny male key deer we saw on Big Pine Key. Key deer are a subspecies of White Tail deer and are on the endangered species list. They live only in the Florida Keys mostly on Big Pine Key in and around the National Key Deer Refuge but they range throught many of the keys during the wet season when they do not have to compete for drinking water. Key deer can not drink water that is more than slightly brackish so during the dry season they retreat to Big Pine Key and to a smaller extent No Name Key. They are very active at night which causes them to be victims of car-deer collisions as they wander along the roadsides and in and out of residents yards. | 2013_03_12_FloridaKeys-10311-Edit800.jpg |
