The statue depicts the lifeless body of Patroclus being supported by the Greek king Menelaus as he carries Patroclus away from the battlefield of the Trojan war. This statue is actually a significant restoration of the original. When the original was discovered in 1570 (in a Roman vineyard) Menelaus was missing from the waist up.
